DEPARTMENT OF ANESTHESIOLOGY, AIIMS KALYANI

Anaesthetic care is required for the surgical, obstetric and many medical procedures, making it fundamental to current medical practice. The basic mandate for anaesthesiologists is to make the perioperative journey safe, painless and comfortable for the patient. However, the current scope of anaesthesiology extends far beyond that.

The anaesthesiologists are not only concerned with the administration of anaesthesia during surgery but are also involved in assessing the underlying comorbidities of the patients and optimizing them before surgery, managing postoperative pain through various modalities, providing intensive care to the critical patients, providing life-saving resuscitation if needed and managing chronic pain as well as palliation in end-stage disorders.

Anaesthesiologists today are trained to cater to the unique needs and manage the consequent risks of a range of surgical and medical specialties, from high-risk surgeries to daycare procedures. Changing patient populations, expanding locations of care, multiple comorbidities, extremes of age, non-communicable epidemics like obesity and addiction as well as pandemics like COVID-19 pose ever-increasing challenges to this specialty.

In the recent years the Anaesthesia care has been transformed with the practice of evidence-based medicine, focus on systematic improvement of patient safety, augmentation of point-of-care ultrasound and the technological advancement of diagnostic and monitoring tools.

As a part of a premier tertiary care teaching institute, the Department of Anaesthesiology, makes an effort to deliver holistic perioperative and intensive care to the patients undergoing surgical procedures and interventions at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Kalyani. We also aim to pursue quality research, as well as train world class peri-operative physicians adept in evidence-based compassionate care across the full scope of modern anaesthetic practice.
