The Department of CTVS was started on January 25 2022 with the start of basic OPD services. With humble beginnings we want to forge the department into a beacon of Cardiothoracic vascular Services for Eastern India and later become a leader in patient care, pioneering innovation, and unparalleled training.
Dr Prafulla Kumar Sen, a son of Bengal, Padma Bhushan awardee was a father/Founder of Cardiothoracic Surgery in India. He performed the first intracardiac operation of any kind, the first open heart surgery. To his credit also the First human Heart Transplant in India way back in February 16, 1968 in Bombay and sixth in the world to do so. He was one of the early surgeons to perform aortic surgery in India in the 1950s. The first in India to perform a closed mitral valvotomy in 1952, repaired a coarctation of the aorta in 1953 and by 1956 he had successfully attempted the first direct vision closure of an atrial septal defect. Trans myocardial acupuncture for ischemic myocardium, Middle aortic syndrome were first reports made by him. So, in his memoir Department is named after Dr PK Sen as he was popularly called.

• Building up a workplace culture to foster & to integrate innovation with an emphasis on collaboration, ongoing training for all staff including technical and administrative staff, and recognition of the integral contribution by every staff member in delivering excellence in heart care.
