The Radiation Oncology department of AIIMS Kalyani started its service with a state-of-the-art radiotherapy machine (High Energy Linear Accelerator) on February 9, 2024. We can now offer a wide range of high precision and advanced external beam radiation services including intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), image guided radiotherapy (IGRT), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and electron therapy..
External Beam Radiotherapy (EBRT) is one of the important treatments for cancer patients. More than 50% of cancer patients need radiation at some point of their treatment. A linear accelerator, also known as a LINAC, is a sophisticated radiotherapy device that uses precision technology to direct radiation only towards cancerous tumors, sparing surrounding healthy tissue.
Radiation therapy is constantly evolving and pushing the boundaries. HELA – Versa HD is a ground-breaking linear accelerator that enables us to safely and efficiently deliver conventional radiation therapies to treat a wide range of tumors throughout the body, while also enabling sophisticated approaches to traditionally difficult cases requiring extreme targeting precision, minimizing radiation doses to surrounding normal tissues and its side effects.
The Department at AIIMS Kalyani, is also equipped with a high dose rate (HDR) Brachytherapy machine – Flexitron, that started its clinical usage on November 18, 2024, with intravaginal Brachytherapy. The dedicated Brachytherapy OT in the Department, was developed by January 2025, following which we are currently performing Intracavitory Brachytherapy procedures too. This has ensured that patients suffering from Cervical Cancer and Endometrial cancer for which Brachytherapy is absolutely essential post EBRT, need not travel elsewhere to complete their radiation treatment. We hope to start more advanced Brachytherapy procedures very soon.
The Department is also equipped with a 12 bedded dedicated day care chemotherapy ward for patients receiving radiation who require chemotherapy to be administered concurrently. Regular supply of basic chemotherapeutic drugs in the ward ensures patient do not need to spend exorbitantly on their basic chemo drugs, required during their radiation. Majority of the patients suffering from Cervical, Head and Neck, Lung cancers, require chemotherapy to be administered weekly during their entire course of radiation, and in-house chemotherapy services ensures that they timely receive their regular chemotherapy under intensive supervision.
In addition, active participation regularly in weekly Multidisciplinary Tumour Board ensures that we, here at AIIMS Kalyani, are able to provide Comprehensive and Holistic Cancer care at cheap costs to cancer patients.
The Department had its formal inauguration with commencement of all its installed services on 18.02.25, in the hands of the respected Excecutive Director, Medical Superintendent, and Dean (academics). Since then, the number of OPD days has been increased to 4 from 2 (Tues, Wed, Thu, Fri). Regular academic activities and seminars in the Department also ensures that our staff remains up to date with the rapid advancements in the field of Radiation Oncology.
